Leicester Regeneration Company: a great start, onto delivery

Leicester Regeneration Company has updated an audience of local business leaders, developers and councillors on the great progress made in the two years since its masterplan was launched and what the next steps will be.

Visitors to the event at the Walkers Stadium in Leicester heard about the site starts planned for early next year. Work is expected to begin on the New Business Quarter’s first phase: the redevelopment of Charles Street Police Station for 100,000 square feet of offices and apartments. Based around a remodelled railway station and ring road, the 500,000 square feet of new offices ultimately planned for the area will be capable of providing up to 4,000 jobs.

Another site start anticipated for 2005 is at the Science and Technology Park at Abbey Meadows, with work starting on the 450,000 square feet of serviced sites offices and incubator units to help attract companies linked to the world-class science at the city’s two universities.

Neil Morris, Chairman of Leicester Regeneration Company, said, “ Since the masterplan was unveiled, an immense amount of work has been done to make the plans reality.

“We are proud of what has been achieved to date in partnership with Leicester City Council, emda, Leicester Shire Economic Partnership, English Partnerships and our development partners. To have got so far in two years from a standing start is incredible.”

City Council Leader Roger Blackmore said, "Leicester Regeneration Company’s masterplan is central to the Council’s activities in regenerating our city. We are thrilled at the progress made so far and excited about what is yet to come from this partnership.”

Kishor Tailor, Chief Executive of the Leicester Shire Economic Partnership, spoke of the wider picture, he said, “The masterplan is one of a number of regeneration and investment projects happening in the city and county at the moment with the LSEP’s support. Leicester really does have a lot to look forward to and be proud of.”

Leicester Regeneration Company’s first review was launched at the event. Subtitled ‘On to Delivery’ the review summarises progress to date and future plans for each of the five projects outlined in the masterplan.

The event was sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland, whose Leicester-based property finance team actively supports the property sector in the county. The Royal Bank of Scotland is also a sponsor of this year’s ProCon Leicestershire Awards, which take place on November 11.
